How bad will things have to get before people realize that the Word of God is true and the basic principals of His Word teach us that we reap what we sow. If we obey Him and worship Him, we are His and He will protect us - but if we don't, we are vulnerable to the evil that we bring upon ourselves.
Why would God allow things like this to happen? It is a result of free will. He created everything, created us, and gave us instructions. If we obey His Word, we could be living in paradise, but because people are rebellious and disobey, paradise is lost. The biggest offense against our Creator, Yahweh, is idolatry.
Worshipping false gods or idols breaks our Father's heart. He wants to help us, but if people are praying to dead gods instead of Yahweh, the one TRUE God, they will receive no help.
Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
