Edom's capital city, Petra, was conquered by the Romans in 106 AD, but its trade declined because of its rival, Palmyra. Petra was conquered by Moslems in the 7th century and by the Crusaders in the 12th century. It gradually fell into ruin and is now part of Jordan.
