Bible Prophecy
Damascus (Syria) destroyed
Est. date written:
Est. date fulfilled:
734 BC
Many cities have been destroyed throughout history but Damascus happens to be one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, if not the oldest, dating back over 5,000 years.
Damascus was conquered by the Israelites abt. 1000 BC, the Assyrians abt. 732 BC, the Babylonians abt. 606 BC, the Persians abt. 530 BC, the Greeks abt. 330 BC, the Nabateans abt. 85 BC, the Romans abt. 63 BC, the Byzantines abt. 634 AD, the Mamelukes abt. 1250 AD and the Ottoman Turks abt. 1516 AD.
Nevertheless, the city has never yet been a ruinous heap, as prophecied in Isaiah 17:1. Other parts of the prophecy have been partially fulfilled, for example in 732 BC, the Assyrians conquered Aram.
